What is the World Trade Center Health Program?

The World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program provides medical monitoring and treatment to eligible responders who were affected by the September 11th terrorist attacks in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, PA, and to eligible survivors of the New York City attacks. The Program was established by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010.

Who is eligible for the World Trade Center Health Program?

The Program serves WTC Responders who responded to September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City, at the Pentagon, or in Shanksville, PA. Responders include:

• Members of a fire or police department (active or retired);
• Emergency health workers;
• Workers from recovery or cleanup contractors; and
• Volunteers who assisted in rescue, recovery, or clean-up efforts.

The Program also serves eligible Survivors of the New York City attacks. This group includes those who:

• Lived, worked or went to school in the New York City disaster area;
• Attended daycare or adult daycare in the New York City disaster area; or
• Were present in the dust or dust cloud in the New York City disaster area on September 11, 2001.

What health issues does the WTC Health Program treat?

The Program screens and treats specific physical and mental health conditions associated with the September 11th terrorist attacks. Conditions include:

• Certain cancers;
• Respiratory diseases like asthma and chronic cough;
• Digestive disorders, such as acid reflux; and
• Mental health conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder.

How does the WTC Health Program provide care?

The WTC Health Program provides medical monitoring and treatment for all eligible responders and survivors who are certified (or approved) for treatment of a condition. The Program also provides medical care, testing, and prescription drugs for all certified conditions.

Where does the Program provide health care?

The Program consists of seven Clinical Centers of Excellence in the New York City metropolitan area. Members who live outside of the New York City metropolitan area may receive care through the Nationwide Provider Network..
